Technical Foundation

Strong, demonstrable Java knowledge with confidence in core language features, the collections framework, concurrency, and the standard library. Comfortable working within a large multi-module Maven project built on Java 17 and Spring Boot. Practical experience with:

Spring ecosystem (dependency injection, transaction management, event-driven patterns, caching, security)

Messaging with JMS / Active

  • MQMongoDB and relational persistence (Spring Data)RESTful API design and inter-service communication
  • Healthcare data standards (FHIR / HAPI FHIR) is a plus but not required
  • Testing with JUnit 5 and Mockito
  • Microsoft Azure cloud services and cloud-native application development
  • What We’re Looking For Beyond Technical Skills
  • Architectural ownership
  • Experience leading the design of a solution from requirements through to implementation. Able to propose, justify, and document architecture and design decisions -- not just execute on someone else’s design. Comfortable owning the technical direction of a feature end-to-end.

Design patterns and error handling

Applies appropriate design patterns to solve problems cleanly and consistently. Designs robust error handling strategies -- thinking about what can fail, how it should fail, and how failures are communicated to the caller and the end user.

Cross-functional collaboration

Experience working closely with teammates from different disciplines -- frontend, DevOps, product owners, business analysts -- to ensure a solution is complete. Able to translate business requirements into technical design, define clear interfaces between teams, and make sure everyone knows what they’re responsible for before work begins.

Testing mindset

Thinks about how a feature should be tested as part of designing it, not as an afterthought. Identifies happy paths, edge cases, and failure scenarios within the context of the product. Understands where unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests each add value and writes them naturally as part of delivery.

Documentation

Documents decisions, designs, and non-obvious behaviour so that teammates can understand and maintain the work. Keeps technical documentation practical and up to date -- not as a box-ticking exercise, but as a tool for the team.

Communication

Clear, concise communicator -- both written and verbal. Can explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders, give and receive feedback constructively, and raise concerns early. Keeps teammates informed without being asked.

Prioritisation and pragmatism

Manages their own time and scope effectively. Knows how to meet requirements with a solution that is clean, maintainable, and fit for purpose.

English proficiency

Strong written and spoken English for daily collaboration, documentation, code reviews, and cross-team communication.
