Senior Java Backend Engineer

Svitla Systems Inc. is looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer for a full-time position (40 hours per week) on a short-term basis (3–6 months) in Poland.

Our client is one of the world’s largest food retailers, operating thousands of stores across the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Europe. The company operates through a wide range of store formats and online channels, offering products across food, grocery, bakery, household, clothing, electronics, health and beauty, and other consumer categories. It also provides services in areas such as retail banking, insurance, and consultancy.

You will join a backend engineering team responsible for designing and delivering scalable services within a modern microservices environment. The role focuses on Java and Spring Boot development, event-driven architecture, distributed systems, and cloud-native technologies, with opportunities to influence technical direction, drive architectural improvements, and lead the delivery of valuable features.

This is a contract until the end of February 2027 with a possible extension.

Hybrid mode with 1-3 days per week working from the office in Kraków.

• Requirements:6+ years of experience as a Software Engineer within the JVM ecosystem.

Experience working in an Agile environment.

Excellent understanding of the programming language and frameworks used, along with a strong working knowledge of the underlying abstraction layers.

Ability to translate business problems into technical strategies, high-level designs, and implementation plans, and lead their execution within the team.

Ability to work with minimal direction or guidance and collaborate effectively with software engineers across teams working on the same or related business problems.

Strong engineering practices and a track record of setting a high standard through design, delivery, code quality, and development processes.

Ability to influence technical and business strategy by proposing innovative approaches and solutions.

Strong communication skills, with the ability to present ideas, gather feedback from diverse stakeholders, and drive alignment toward effective outcomes.

Ability to identify and address design and architectural deficiencies and simplify integration between peer teams and services.

Consistent track record of leading the delivery of valuable, high-quality features.

Ability to identify and drive process improvements across the team.

Experience contributing to requirements elaboration and clarification where necessary.

Responsibilities:

Design, develop, and implement robust backend services using Spring Boot and modern Java frameworks.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, scalable microservices.

Design and implement efficient data management solutions.

Leverage event-driven architecture and Kafka for real-time data processing.

Implement comprehensive testing strategies using JUnit 5, AssertJ, Mockito, and other industry-standard tools.

Work closely with the team to shape project direction, clarify ambiguous requirements, and develop effective solutions.

Proactively identify and apply appropriate design patterns to improve code quality, maintainability, and scalability.

Contribute to technical and architectural decisions and continuously improve backend services and development practices.
