Requirements description

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, HCI, or related discipline.
• 4–7 years of experience in front-end or full-stack development.
• Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and experience with React, Next.js, or similar modern frameworks.
• Experience building Office Add-ins with Office.js and familiarity with the Microsoft 365 platform.
• Strong understanding of DOM manipulation, component-based UI design, and responsive layout techniques.
• Familiarity with asynchronous patterns, secure API integration, and state management (Redux, Context API).
• User-centered mindset with experience working closely with design teams to deliver polished, accessible UI.
• Strong communication and technical documentation skills; ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.

Ideal Qualifications:

• Exposure to large language model ( LLM) applications or familiarity with generative AI capabilities such as summarization, rewriting, or retrieval augmented generation ( RAG).
• Experience deploying secure front-end applications in enterprise environments.
• Familiarity with Fluent UI or Microsoft’s design language. Interest in scientific computing, biomedical research tools, or life sciences workflows.
• Contributions to open-source projects or a visible project portfolio (e.g., GitHub).

Offer description

We are seeking a Senior Frontend Engineer to lead the development of a Microsoft Word Add-in for our AI-powered document review and authoring assistant. This assistant - currently built in React/Next.js - helps researchers generate, revise, and navigate scientific content more effectively by integrating large language models (LLMs) into their authoring workflows.

You will play a pivotal role in translating this browser-based side panel solution into a seamless Word Add-in, bringing intelligent, contextual assistance directly into the document creation process. This is an ideal role for a skilled front-end engineer with strong JavaScript fundamentals and an appreciation for user experience, looking to work at the intersection of productivity, design, and AI.

This 3-month contract role offers a unique opportunity to shape how researchers interact with intelligent systems while authoring and reviewing complex scientific documents.

Your responsibilities

1. Lead the technical development of a Word Add-in based on an existing React/Next.js application.
2. Use Office.js and related technologies to build and integrate an interactive side panel into Microsoft Word (Office 365 web and desktop).
3. Collaborate with product, UX, and AI teams to adapt the AI assistant’s features (e.g., summarization, rewriting, navigation) into a performant and user-friendly add-in experience.
4. Ensure cross-platform compatibility, responsive design, and secure communication with backend APIs and AI inference services.
5. Maintain a modular, testable, and maintainable codebase with an eye for scalability.
6. Support the future expansion of the add-in to other Office tools or enterprise contexts as needed.
